The triviality of social media
When we look around, in places where there is a
mass of people, the first thing we notice is that most of them stay with their
heads down, their nape to the sky and their face to the ground. ¿What is the
cause of this? They’re looking at their smartphones. The current necessity of
being aware if there is new tweet from our favorite celebrity, a new polemic rant on
Facebook or if we got a new follower on Instagram has produced a social
transformation that reflects on the shallowness of people. As everything
becomes more quick and contingent, we can see less deep.
In my opinion, this had lead us to a sad
paradox: currently most people have internet and social media access, which
should make communication and social relationships more fluid than ever;
instead, electronic devices have managed to place a curtain separating us,
faking real connection and giving us just simulacra of reality.
People can easily alter the image they project
on social media, based on what they think is convenient or advantageous. More
often that one could expect, they don’t look like themselves at all on their
profile pictures, and don’t really think what they write on their online
speeches. It’s seems like it’s all about appearance, from pictures to
personality or even ideology.
What about you? Who do you want to be?
